That'd be pretty hypocritical of me, considering I started out as one of those rebels and protestors. Although mostly I prefer the term hacktivist, just to be clear.
rathercommon: (not sure what's happening but not good)

[ ...Huh. ]

Rebelling against what?
hacker: ("fight me helen")

[personal profile] hacker 2015-06-18 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Injustice. Government secrecy. That kind of thing.

What actions did you take? To stand up to them.
hacker: (if i don’t insult you daily)

I was with the Rising Tide back then. A bunch of hackers pooling their resources to crack open government feeds, files, databases, and putting them out there on the web. We revealed the truth, let people see what was really going on.

Not just the U.S., either. A lot of social change relies on social media and the internet these days. We were a dedicated group to facilitate that, to out the atrocities of bad governments and shed light in the dark corners even our own didn't want the people to see.
rathercommon: (attentive)

[personal profile] rathercommon 2015-06-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Did it work? At all. Did you manage to make change?
hacker: (when it's burning low)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-06-18 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
We did what we could. Got a lot of people held accountable to what they otherwise might have gotten away with.
But I made a lot more change with SHIELD. Working within the system to change how it operates, instead of putting people in danger because I was poking my head into something I couldn't understand.

[personal profile] rathercommon 2015-06-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know you were really changing it, though? I mean - if you're inside the system, they know where you are and what you're seeing. They can control the information you see. They get to know you. And when they know you, they can fool you.
hacker: (never to touch and never to keep)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-06-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Because I never just took their word for it. I went looking for the truth myself and I fought back if I thought something they were doing was wrong.
rathercommon: (leery)

[personal profile] rathercommon 2015-06-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Did they not know about your history?
hacker: (boys go to jupiter to get more stupider)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-06-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
They did. It's why they hired me. When I was with the Rising Tide, I hacked SHIELD too. My boss wasn't exactly your run-of-the-mill government toolbag. He was a hero. He knew the system was broken, and he was trying to help fix it too. Saw what I was trying to do, and gave me a chance to help him do it better.
rathercommon: (skeptical)

[personal profile] rathercommon 2015-06-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
So he was the one person who's ever gone into government who's actually decent?
rathercommon: (tired)

[personal profile] rathercommon 2015-06-18 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you didn't actually trust him. Or at least kept your eyes open. People go into government so that they can have charge of others. Because they like the power.
hacker: (that they dont have arms)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-06-18 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I used to think the same thing, and believe me, I've met plenty of people who'd prove you right. But that's not Coulson.
rathercommon: (mistrustful)

[ Maybe that's true. Maybe he is good. Kitty's never met him; what basis does she have for doubting? No basis except her own preconceptions and prejudices, and those had certainly been proven lately not to be so reliable, right? And it's not like Kitty's actively rooting for everyone involved in government to actually be rotten. It would be much better if some of them were good, if some of them genuinely looked out for their people. She used to want them all to be exactly the same, yeah, all identically wicked so that she could hate them all and make it easier, but...But she's really realized that it's far better for principles to come from reality, not to smooth over reality to feel better about your principles. ]

That's good, then. I hope he really is everything you think he is. And I hope I'm wrong and that there are more like him out there.
hacker: ([for 10 years like a fine wine])

Someday, if I can pull him out, you'll see for yourself.

I hope I will. I hope dearly that you can see your friend again.
